Nascimento e Silva Investigador independenteABSTRACT Catarina de Orta was the youngest full sister of Garcia de Orta, the author of the «Coloquios dos simples, he drogas e cousas mediçinais da India» (published in Goa, 1563). Born c. 1512, in Castelo de Vide (Alentejo, Portugal), she faced the Inquisition in Lisbon (1547) and in Portuguese Goa (1568-69), where she was executed. Silva Carvalho’s revelation, in 1934, that Garcia de Orta originated from a former Spanish Jewish family converted to Catholicism in Portugal, in 1496-97, changed the perception about Garcia de Orta. In 1960, I. S. Révah corrected some statements made by Silva Carvalho and focused on the descendants of the Ortas’ family. In this context, Catarina de Orta’s Inquisition files were among those most relevant to assess biographical elements. The communication aims to review, in this same perspective, the content of these files concerning her immediate family.

  Goa Inquisition and the death of Garcia de Orta, Jewish doctor of Goa. Extracto He died in 1568 but his family and sister Catarina were unlucky and arrested in the same year of their arrival from Portugal. The religious heads who oversaw the persecution of non-Christians and others were so ruthless, without any remorse or respect for the departed souls, dug the graves of those converts who were secretly Jewish. During that time Garcia's sisters and his family were tortured till they “confessed” to their being Jews. They told officials that Garcia de Orta was Jewish as well. The family was charged with their crimes and burned them alive at the stake on October 25, 1569. Then the inquisitors did an awfully bad thing no civilized person could ever think of - an inhuman and despicable act. Garcia' was posthumously convicted by the Inquisition Court and his mortal remains were exhumed in 1580 from his grave and burned to ashes along with copies of his books, except the work Coloquios dos simples e drogas e cousas medicinais da India. Catarina da Orta, sister of the celebrated Garcia, was burnt at the stake in Goa on 25th of October 1569. It is a manuscript of about 140 pages, and curiously, two manuscript copies were made, and which are to be found in the Torre do Tombo in Lisbon under the numbers 1282 and 1283, that testify about the legacy of Catarina da Orta. Whilst the processes of the Inquisition contain many data, it must not be forgotten that many of them were obtained under torture. In the processes against women, it is frequent to read confessions of their having had sexual relations with the devil, and other absurdities. Catarina, was imprisoned by the Inquisition in Goa, through some slanderous rumour, in October 1568, She denounced all her own people: her husband, her daughter, her sisters, her mother, the uncles, cousins, her son-in-law, the sisters of the son-in-law, the neighbours, other “new Christians” and even relatives living in Lisbon. It isn’t strange that this should come about, because the tortures and torments of the Inquisition were not mild, nor courteous. In this process, she confesses and then recants. She denounced her daughters, and later recanted.. She delivered her mother to the Inquisitors, and later on she declares that she had lied. With Brianda it was the same old story. Catarina manifested that Brianda ate pork meat on the days forbidden by the Church, and that she did not have a shirt to bury her husband, but later denies twice over that she had lied.
